Literacy Practices in Sherlock

 

This response was a continuation to homework response two. Here, we had to finish reading Bartlett and Holland's article on Literacy Practices and apply our newfound knowledge to the figured world we would be observing for assignment one. We had to give a rundown on the social conventions of the figured world, and we had to generate a list (with some descriptions) on the various actors, locations, artifacts, and discourse communities we expected to find. This was a cool approach because I was doing my observations on BBC's Sherlock, and so this response encouraged me to dissect one of my favorite shows and approach things from an anthropological and literary theory perspective. It's amazing how this approach extends to most social situations, both real and imagined. While my list ended up not being exhaustive, it was illustrious enough for the assignment's purposes (it seems like an infinite amount of detail is needed to truly capture the complexities of a chosen figured world).
