Most of us think about literacy in the traditional sense: reading, writing, and years of English classes. However, this characterization of literacy misses the real essence between what it means to be literate: it means being able to effectively communicate with others. This reading provided new terms and concepts that expanded my notions of literacy and discourse. It gave me the framework for assignment one, which entails the detailed observation of a figured world and the actors, artifacts, and discourse communities within it. Basically, literary practices are the ways we practice communication, shape our identities, and interact with the world around us. Keep this in mind the next time you have a conversation with someone, send an email, shrug your shoulders, or browse the internet.
